The true athletes at BRR move on four legs! We never tire of watching them work, play, eat and even sleep. It is an honor to spend our time with these wonderful canine competitors. From our youngest to the oldest they are our friends. People often ask if we have trouble remembering the names of all of our dogs and we answer that they truly are not unlike our children and we remember their names!
MEET THE BARK RIVER RACE TEAM MEMBERS!
Panther and Flake - At age 6 and age 4 these two females will take on all challengers! Panther never skips a beat and Flake is right by her side.
Vargus, the beautiful black and tan male, is all business when in harness! Alaska born, but Wisconsin raised, he is working hard to make his siblings on the Redington teams proud, and succeeding!! Toby, one of the Country Boys, stands tall and has legs that never quit. At 15 months Toby was part of the Wyoming team - one of a litter of four powerful, strong, and focused males.
The Rat
The Rat Amazing things come in small packages! At 32# soaking wet, Rat may just be one of the toughest sled dogs you will ever meet. Born in September of 2002, she has finished 2 Iditarods, 2 John Beargrease Marathons, 2 UP200, and many, many more mid distance races. We are proud to have Rat be a special part of Bark River Racing.
Pistachio 'Stach was born in the winter of 1999 and came to BRR the year prior to Matt's Iditarod run. Pistachio is one of the hardest charging, focused sled dogs you will ever meet. However, as anyone who knows her realizes few can call her "their friend"! She is so focused on her job that being cuddly with humans is the last thing she has time for! "Let's hit the trail! Don't waste time petting and cooing over me" she seems to say. Pistachio retired herself from racing last season, but still trains our puppies, and there is no one better to do that! Our breeding program is built around this magnificent athlete and we are proud that we can call her our "friend"!
Mak - Mak was born in June of 2004. In March 2007, not yet three, he completed his first Iditarod, and he has never lost his temper or his enthusiasm. He is an amazing athlete and if he were human, he would be the guy everyone wants to hang out with! Mak is friendly, loving, a good sport, and he even likes puppies. Mak is the dog that you want in your team when the going gets rough - high winds, deep snow, distractions, top speeds - he is the one that will pull you through. He is the father to both our newest pups, The Beans, and to the Country Boys!
Gretchen - As you can see Gretchen, born in April 2006, is full of energy, the trick with her was figuring out just how to "harness" it! The first couple of years with our Gretchen were challanging to say the least, as she took her time learning how to focus. But last season she put it all together and she is an amazing athlete! With her speed and ablitiy, watch for Gretchen to be on the "A" team this year, helping to train and educate our youngsters.
September
Hattie - Born in May of 2005 Hattie is one of the most joyful dogs in the BRR kennel. She truly loves her job and makes no secret of it! Hattie's parents are Africa and Bots. Long time BRR fans know each of them well and her pedigree explains her enthusiam for life, for as the saying goes "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree"!
